Why single readings are almost worthless

The device. A validated upper-arm monitor. Wrist devices are more sensitive to position and less reliable. Cuff size matters — a cuff too small for your arm reads falsely high, which is a common source of unnecessary alarm.
The preparation. No caffeine, smoking or exercise for thirty minutes. Empty your bladder. Sit quietly for five minutes first — this step is skipped almost universally and it matters.
The position. Back supported, feet flat on the floor, legs uncrossed, arm resting at heart level. Cuff on bare skin, not over a sleeve.

Reading the result
Use seven-day averages, discarding the first day. This is what clinical guidelines specify for home monitoring, and it is the only way to see a real change through daily noise.
